Training Models for Animal Procedures

Biomedical researchers can use devices that model animal anatomy for developing skills in animal handling, basic procedures and surgical methods. This page is a directory of such models and their sources.

Basic Procedures

Not species-specific:

A series of models that you can build inexpensively for learning basic techniques of animal handling and injections in several species (rodent, rabbit, etc.). Includes list of materials and instructions. Examples: sock rodent model and vein model. S. Walshaw, VMD, Michigan State University (presented on the LAWTE site).

Rodents:

Koken Rat for learning venipuncture and intra-gastric tubing B & K Universal, Inc. More info available here.

Rabbits:

Koken Rabbit for learning venipuncture and intra-gastric tubing, B & K Universal, Inc. More info available here.

Dogs:

DASIE-CM (Cervical Model). For learning jugular venipuncture and catheter placement for bronchoalveolar lavage. Contact: David Holmberg, DVM, MVSc, University of Guelph. Detailed information available here.

Female Urinary Catheter Training Mannikin. Anatomically correct for the vulva, clitoral fossa, vaginal vault, urethral papilla, and urethral orifice enabling the learner to practice the complex skill of urinary catheterization using visual or tactile cues, Rescue Critters, Inc.

Intubation Trainer Mannikin. Realistic airway, trachea, esophagus, epiglottis, working lungs, Rescue Critters, Inc.

IV Trainer, for IV draw and injections. Rescue Critters, Inc.

Surgery - General

Suture Trainer Arm, canine, for both internal & external sutures, Rescue Critters, Inc.
